The earliest grape variety to be sown on this estate was Grenache which was sowed in 1930s. First Shiraz was planted in 1953. It was followed by Cabernet Sauvignon in 1972 which, due to the typical climate of McLaren Vale, became famous a ‘Reynella Selection’.

Some parts of the wine estate date back to millions of years, right till the Eocene period. Wines produced from vineyards present on these geological formations have been named as ‘Maxwell Eocene’.
